Week 1 – 1×02: Summer Rewatch Salt & Peppa Style (S1-S3)

Week 1: May 23-29 Flowers for Your Grave, Nanny McDead, Hedge Fund Homeboys, Hell Hath No Fury

1×02 Nanny McDead

Now Castle has solved the pseudo copycat-case, the mayor orders him accepted as permanent police consultant. First case, Howard Peterson and Sara Peterson’s nanny Sara Manning, from Georgia, was found dead in their building’s clothes dryer. Once more, Castle comes up with the non-evident questions and ideas to establish the infidelity-related motive and several suspects. IMDB

Things we love about Ryan & Esposito in this episode:
~Ryan’s dryer “etiquette” (1:45)
~How enthralled with Castle’s story they get (7:30)
~How well Ryan & Esposito’s suits compliment each other and match.
~Ryan’s humor with taunting Beckett (“Kill joy!”)
~Seeing that Ryan is a “fanboy” of Castle’s books (carrying the books around frequently at the precinct)

Great lines:
~Espo: “If that’s not a cautionary tale about poking around someone else’s laundry. I don’t know what is.”
~Beckett: “I thought you went commando, Esposito” Espo [head nod] “Seasonal thing.”
~Castle: [to Espo, Ryan, & Captain Montgomery] “3 men huddled around a computer. That better not be porn, and if it is, I want in.”

How they contribute to the episode:
~Pulled the security footage for the apartment building where the murder took place
~Espo pulling information to pinpoint the victim’s cell phone’s location & also to find the victim’s ex-boyfriend

How they could have contributed more to the episode:
~Ryan & Espo could have interviewed Mrs. Peterson after it was discovered that she lied to Beckett
~Espo & Ryan could have gone to Chloe Richardson’s apartment to pick her up after they watched the security footage of her

Other things that it would have been nice to see them do:
~Scene of Espo & Ryan picking up the victim’s ex-boyfriend (& maybe him running so Espo could rough him up)

The best & worst thing about them in the episode:
Best- Ryan taunting Beckett with a lead (21:56)
Worst- lack of scenes just of Ryan & Espo

Scene times:
1:15- Ryan briefs Beckett on the victim
6:05- Espo, Ryan, & Captain checking security tape for apartment building
12:39- Beckett talking w/Ryan, Espo, & Castle about the victim’s “attacker” & his use of a condom; Espo has the victim’s cell phone records & has “pinged” it to locate its whereabouts
21:24- Espo informs Beckett that the ex-boyfriend’s alibi checks out & Ryan also says that Mrs.Peterson wasn’t where she claimed she was
30:41- Ryan relays information that the condoms from Ian Harris’ apartment are a match to the spermicide found on the victim; the gang checks out security footage to see where Chloe Richardson is at the time the victim was murdered
32:37- Ryan & Espo meet Castle & Beckett outside the apartment building to apprehend Chloe; they inform Beckett that there is no answer from the Harris’ apartment when the doorman called up; Ryan, Espo, Beckett & Castle head into the Harris’ apartment to find Ian passed out & Diana & her daughter Becca holed up in the bathroom
34:10- Espo accompanies Beckett & Castle to the apartment building’s basement & clears out the area of onlookers

Random thoughts:
~See Ryan holding one of Castle’s books for the 1st time at 12:39 & again at 21:26

Stats:
~handshakes/fist bumps- N/A
~”Yo!” count- N/A
~silliness in the background- N/A

Week 1 – 1×01: Summer Rewatch Salt & Peppa Style (S1-S3)

Week 1: May 23-29 Flowers for Your Grave, Nanny McDead, Hedge Fund Homeboys, Hell Hath No Fury

1×01 Flowers for Your Grave

Murder mystery author Richard ‘Rick’ Castle publishes the book in which he kills off his bestseller series’ hero, Derek Storm. On that very day, NYPD detective Kate Beckett questions him about two murders in the exact style of his novels, on a lawyer Fisk viz. social worker Alyson Tisdale. He’s professionally flattered to have a copycat. Her boss, captain Roy Montgomery, accepts his help as case consultant and teams them up, the mayor being a fan puts him de facto in charge. More copy killing follows. The police simplistically arrest his fan Kyle Cabot, the first common link. Castle and his author friends decide he must keep investigating, on the assumption it’s a motive cover-up, which he does brilliantly, as even Beckett must grudgingly admit. IMDB

Things we love about Ryan & Esposito in this episode:
~The confused face Ryan makes when Beckett gives them RC’s books
~Esposito’s ribbing of Beckett

Great lines:
(2:45) Esposito: “Jack shot Jill over Bill…”
(11:36) Ryan: “From the library of Katherine Beckett” Espo: “Yo! Check it girl. You’re totally a fan.”
(16:44) Esposito: “A control freak like you with something you can’t control. No, no. That’s going to be more fun than Shark Week.”
(20: 09) Ryan: “You should invite him to join the book club.”

How they contribute to the episode:
~Filling Beckett in on 1st murder suspect
~Espo discovering gun & Allison’s blouse in Cabot’s apartment

How they could have contributed more to the episode
~The first time we see Beckett with Esposito and the other guy – was a really great entrance and would have been nice for it to have been re-filmed with Ryan there.
~Beckett’s first meeting Castle – would have been good to see her flanked by Ryan & Esposito.
~Could have helped read Castle’s fan mail
~At 2nd crime scene, Esposito (or preferably Ryan J ) could have given Beckett the low down on the victim
~It would have been funny if Esposito was in the precinct when Castle gave Beckett the Storm Falls book b/c he could have made fun of her again
~Could have gone w/Beckett when she arrested Castle instead of the faceless cops
~Ryan could have covered the alleyway when Esposito & Beckett were going into Harrison Tisdale’s apartment

Other things that it would have been nice to see them do:
~Scene of them making funny remarks about what’s in the fan letters to Castle
~Loved Castle bonding with Espo at the precinct (16:20) – would have been nice to see a scene like that bonding with Ryan.
~When Beckett arrests Castle – would have been fun if Ryan & Espo had cuffed him!

The best & worst thing about them in the episode:
Best- Ryan’s laugh (11:35); Esposito poking fun at Beckett about Castle
Worst- not enough Ryan L (so could have replaced the cop that was only in this episode)

Scene times:
1:58- see Esposito & Ryan for 1st time
11:17- 12:38- scene w/RC’s books
12:54- info about crime scene & Esposito pointing out Castle
16:12- Esposito & Castle @ Esposito’s desk
19:20- Beckett’s back up as they go into Kyle Cabot’s apartment
22:08- taking down the murder board
27:14- Esposito talking to Beckett about Castle getting to her; case talk
34:04- Ryan checking Harrison Tisdale’s alibi
36:50- Esposito going w/Beckett to Harrison Tisdale’s apartment

Random thoughts:
~Only episode where Jon & Seamus are listed as guest stars

Stats:
~handshakes/fist bumps- N/A
~”Yo!” count – 1 (“Yo check it girl, you’re totally a fan!”)
~silliness in the background- N/A

Castle – Law & Murder Reviews

One of my favourite scenes in this episode (and I suspect S will agree with me) was witnessing Ryan and Esposito investigate the victim’s apartment while discussing Shakespeare quotes. Esposito, not impressed that Ryan brings up the Bard, puts him in his place by telling him he’s not Castle. They go on to discuss the precise details of how many and which quotes would be needed to make someone a Renaissance Man, even as they discover and take down a suspect hiding in a closet. It’s nice to see that Castle and Beckett don’t have a monopoly on workplace banter, and that the Ryan and Esposito relationship is strong enough that the writers can throw in great moments like this. Although Ryan and Esposito have had a great brotherly camaraderie from the beginning, it’s always fun to watch Jon Huertas and Seamus Dever play off each other. I also really like when we get to see them in the interrogation room – it reminds us that they actually do important work, even if the show usually focuses on Beckett’s side of the investigation.

I love this show so much! I didn’t so much enjoy the mystery this week (I had it figured out pretty early on), but there were so many great character moments. Ryan and Esposito would be the best thing about Castle, if it weren’t for everything else. Relationships that could be trite and typical for television are so much deeper and more complicated here.

Esposito “Bro, you’re not Castle.”
Ryan: “Yeah, I know I’m not Castle.”
Esposito: “Then stop trying to talk like him.”
Ryan: “I’m not allowed to reference The Bard? I’m a Renaissance man.”
Esposito: “Memorizing one quote does not make you a Renaissance man.”
Ryan: “How about if I memorized two?”
Esposito: “Have you memorized two?”
Ryan: “No. But what if I did?”

More Knockdown Reviews

Also can I just say how much I ADORED Ryan and Esposito in this episode? Those two are the best characters ever, always making me laugh and recently they’ve become more than just the butt of Castle’s jokes. The fact that they got to not only take the lead on a case – but then get kidnapped and show the badassed that they can both be by taking the bad guy’s torture and not giving in – just knocked them up to a whole other level for me. They are officially my heroes now.

My favorite bits…

Ryan and Esposito claiming they were there as Beckett’s backup.

The captain telling Ryan and Esposito what the “fine print” on his badge said and ordering them to take point on the Ragland case.

Ryan and Esposito telling the drug dealer all about the cellmate he’s gonna get in order to scare him into talking. Who knew that someone named “Peppermint” would sound so scary.

Completely freaking out when Beckett heard the flashbang over the phone when Ryan and Esposito got taken.

Cheering when Ryan and Esposito agreed that they were definitely gonna have to go for option B and jerk Lockwood around.

Ryan calling Lockwood an assclown and then telling him that he went to Catholic school and they used to do stuff like that to him for talking in class. Both my parents went to Catholic school and from the stories I’ve heard, he wasn’t far off.

Ryan telling Esposito not to tell the jackhole anything. Ha!

Esposito admitting that the cops already knew everything about him and the guy’s mom. OMG so much love for both of them!

The Rest of the Force: This episode showed just how loyal Ryan and Esposito are to Beckett. They cover for Beckett when she’s at the coffee shop without backup, and then try to quit the case in solidarity when Captain Montgomery sends her home. Montgomery, who does an admirable job of straddling the line between concern for Beckett and commitment to proper police work throughout this episode, makes them stay on the case and convinces them that the best way to help Beckett is to solve it. All of this, of course, leads to the torture scene, in which Ryan and Esposito prove their dedication to each other and to Beckett once and for all, and Jon Huertas and Seamus Dever prove their acting chops with material much more serious than they’re usually given on this show.

Supporting Ryan/Esposito Directly to the Network

There are a few polls floating around the internet right now. These are not your garden-variety “vote for your favorites” popularity contest polls. These are polls put out by the network themselves, looking specifically for feedback about Castle directly from the fans. Both provide some great opportunities for fans of Ryan and Esposito to speak out on their behalf. Let’s show the network that Ryan and Esposito have a huge fanbase and that the fans are thirsty for more.

ABC.Com and Qualtrics
Link: http://abc.go.com/shows/castle
Details: ABC.com has put forth a poll on their Castle page regarding the latest episode, “Set-Up.” Just go to the page and you will see a pop-up asking you to participate. You will be asked a series of questions, some of which ask specifically about the characters. This is your chance to rate your enjoyment of the characters as well as how important each character is to your overall enjoyment of the show. You will also be asked a couple of open-ended questions (including “What did you enjoy most about this episode?”) where you will have the opportunity to brag about the stellar performances by Jon and Seamus.

ABC Studios Advisory Panel; “Castle Activity”
Link: http://abcstudios.brand-advisor.com
Details: This website is a private community allowing fans to interact directly with ABC Studios. “As a member of this exclusive panel, you’ll be given opportunity to interact with the people in charge. We consider our advisors an important part of our creative team so your opinions and feedback will greatly impact our current and upcoming shows.” Unfortuantely, membership is strict and precise. You must qualify to become a member. If you do not meet their qualification standards, they will not give you an account, and you will not have another chance to sign up (so choose your demographic answers carefully!). If you are able to sign up, and/or if you already have an account, log in and click on “Activities” at the top. There is a “Castle Activity” poll on that page where you can answer questions about what you like best and least about Castle. This is a great opportunity to focus on Ryan and Esposito in terms of your likes and dislikes. Highlight episodes where the boys were the forefront of attention as your favorites, and bring up episodes where they were back-burnered as some of your least favorites. You will also have the opportunity to rate all the characters as well as choose your top three favorite “minor characters” and explain why.

Tips:
Stay positive with everything you say in the open-ended questions. For example, rather than say, “I hate when there’s barely any Ryan or Esposito!” you can say, “I really enjoy Ryan and Esposito, and I hope to see more scenes with them in the future.” Be mindful of your attitude in everything that you write. Remember that the studio executives will be reading these comments. You want to present yourself, as well as the Castle fan community, as polite, positive, dedicated, and passionate. You can prove your enthusiasm by suggesting some specific story ideas you’d like to see happen in the show with the boys. This will show that you give a great deal of thought to the show and that you are invested in the stories as well as the characters. They will probably receive a ton of feedback about the more “front runner” characters, so let’s give some attention to Ryan and Esposito!

In the mean time, please spread the word. The more participation from Ryan/Esposito fans, the better!

Knockdown: Reviews

Castle episode 3×13 ‘Knockdown’ is being claimed as a fan favorite and offers proof that Ryan & Esposito should have more screen time every week! Check out some great reviews about what people thought about Seamus Dever & Jon Huertas’ performance:

Don’t even get me started on Ryan and Esposito–they are ridiculously awesome. They’ve always been. However, this episode only further proved their loyalty to Castle, Beckett, and to one another. The torture scene was not only intense, but hilarious! You can’t expect anything less with those two! SOURCE

Having the case focus on Joanna Beckett made it personal for all of our favorite detectives. Ryan and Esposito knew they needed to find answers, Captain knew he had to keep Kate at a distance from it, Castle knew he needed to be their for his partner and Beckett knew who to turn to when she needed someone to trust. Ryan and Esposito were great all around. They swore they were backing up Beckett and they took the ice torturing because they knew they had no choice. I love that these two are getting more screen time every week. SOURCE

Regarding Ryan and Esposito, I had no real fear for their well-being, but I did like to see their relationship and the distress shown on Esposito’s face when he realizd he was causing Ryan’s pain. SOURCE

Back-up detective duo, Ryan and Esposito, are plays fabulously and hilariously by Seamus Dever and Jon Huertas. Seriously, watch out in the background for these two…funny looks, sly little comments and some friendly sparring make Dever and Huertas one of the best teams on TV. They may not be the leads, but they are definitely scene-stealers! SOURCE

Wow. How awesome were Ryan and Esposito in this episode? In my opinion, they’re two of the key ingredients that make Castle so great, and just in case the rest of the world didn’t know that, they certainly proved it tonight.

At first respectfully declining the case of Raglan’s murder and by extension the murder of Beckett’s mom out of loyalty and respect to Beckett herself, Ryan and Esposito then take it upon themselves to not let Beckett down, working harder than I’ve ever seen them work to make sure that they find that shooter. And, once they do, they manage to put up with extreme torture, what with Ryan constantly being dunked into and held under ice cold water while Esposito is forced to watch. Yet, they still refuse to give Lockwood any information and even manage to crack a few jokes in the face of extreme danger. There is absolutely no doubt about it. These guys rock! SOURCE

This one was solid. Nice tension at the end, and I loved that Ryan and Esposito were used more. I wouldn’t mind an episode or two that gave them more to do. SOURCE

The Ryan/Esposito tortue scene was one of my favorites of the episode. Not because they were being tortured but because they were willing to risk their lives in order to protect information. Very brave. I admire them. Not to mention the comic relief once again with: “they already know about me and your mom” LOL! Ryan even laughed. Four for you Esposito, you go Esposito! SOURCE

Ryan and Esposito were great all around. They swore they were backing up Beckett and they took the ice torturing because they knew they had no choice. I love that these two are getting more screen time every week. SOURCE

I like it when they work on Beckett’s mother’s case, so this was nice, but nowhere near perfect. I know there was a fakeout makeout between Castle and Beckett (Yay!) but my favourite thing was the torture scene with the other guys. You just have to love the bromance between Ryan and Esposito. SOURCE

And these were just a few!

The only thing sorely missing from this episode was a moment between Ryan & Esposito at the end of the episode to prove to viewers that they are indeed ok! It felt jarring and a little off that there was a moment between Castle & Beckett, but not one between them.

Reviews of Castle 3×11 Nikki Heat

…But as much as I found myself laughing, “Nikki Heat” also brought me to tears. I’m not too proud to admit I cried a bit at the end, like any sappy, over-emotional girl would. This is the first episode that Ryan has had his own story (aside from a few minutes where they first introduced his girlfriend), and even though it was just used as filler for the main arc, it was still wonderful to see Seamus Dever getting some love. Ryan is one of my favorite supporting characters, and I loved every minute he was on the screen.
Source

…And how about Ryan (Seamus Dever) proposing to Jenny (played by his real-life wife, Juliana Dever)? That was one of the sweetest, simplest scenes of the whole series. Last fall, Seamus Dever told me that things were going to start happening for Ryan, and I’m glad they did.
Source

…Before he gets too bent out of shape, Castle is called to a murder scene – to discover that Rhodes is at the scene, and will be shadowing Beckett to learn everything she can about the woman who was the model for the character. Now, he’s really appalled – but everyone else is in awe… especially Detective Kevin Ryan [Seamus Dever], who has her on his ‘exception list’ [the list of five celebrities he would get a free pass to sleep with if he got the chance]. This interferes, somewhat, with his efforts to propose to his girlfriend, Jennifer [Juliana Dever].

‘Nikki Heat’ is about average for an episode of Castle. It’s smart, funny and plays its carefully marshaled moments of drama to full effect. Writer David Grae has a lot of fun with Rhodes’ transformation into Beckett/Heat, playing the change for a sly creepiness [Rhodes is very Method] as Castle finds himself working on a case with, effectively, two Becketts! Grae also has fun with a little white lie Ryan tells in order to ask Jennifer’s parents for her hand – a little white lie that gets complicated when his partner, Esposito [Jon Huertas] isn’t let in on it in advance.

Ryan And Esposito: So Freakin’ Married That… Can You Even Read Them As Just Buddies?

Ryan and Esposito. Esposito and Ryan. They’re always a duo (a duet, even), they finish each other’s sentences, they bicker, they pick on each other, they make “bro” jokes… it’s such a lovely friendship that some people have found themselves wondering “Is there a het reading for this relationship?”

I suppose there is if you squint; after all, Ryan’s brought his girlfriend to work and thus “proved” she actually exists. But in a fandom where even the gen feels off if there’s no Ryan/Esposito interaction, I have to wonder.

I love that Ryan and Esposito aren’t just two interchangeable background characters that we’re throwing together because they happen to be there and be pretty. These are two distinct guys, each with their own hobbies, habits, and foibles. Ryan can be terribly naive; Esposito is a very sharp dresser. And both guys are loyal to the max, both to each other and to Beckett. They kinda like that Castle guy, too. The fact of the matter is, the show wouldn’t be the same without them (or without their background flirting), and I love that.

The 2010 Show Stalker Awards – Best Bromance

Ryan and Esposito are nominated in the ‘Best Bromance’ category of Wetpaint’s 2010 Show Stalker Awards! Make sure you show your support for them and vote!

From the awesome — J.D. and Turk from Scrubs — to the worst ever — Dawson and Pacey from Dawson’s Creek — bromances have become a standard on our favorite shows. Here are some standouts from the past year.

And the nominees are…

- Chuck and Nate (Gossip Girl): Remember the good old days? Oh, how we miss the strong bond between these two. Plus, they were so gosh-darned pretty together.

- Mr. and Miss J (America’s Next Top Model): As you know, when these two walk into a room, they are greeted by a pack of screaming girls. Okay, so maybe the wannabe models would erupt into glass-shattering shrieks if a random math professor sauntered into view, but that doesn’t mean that Mr. and Miss J. aren’t da bomb.

- Alaric and Damon (The Vampire Diaries): These kindred spirits definitely make an impressive team protecting Mystic Falls and the Gilberts. Not to mention that Dalaric is one of the best couple-name mashups, um, ever.

- M.V.P. (Jersey Shore): Mike, Vinny, and Paul were on fist-pumping overload when they realized their first names spelled out this kick-ass acronym, a sign of true bromance.

- Ryan and Esposito (Castle): These chemistry-charged sidekick detectives have such a strong connection that they’re nearly stealing the show from Beckett and Castle. Could a spin-off be in the works? Sign us up!

- Matthew Morrison and John Stamos (Glee): On screen, these two play romantic rivals Will Schuester and Dr. Carl, fighting over cutie-pie germaphobe Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), but off-screen they’re best buds. The two even have pet names for each other: J. Sizzle and Matty Fresh. Too far?

- Damon and Mason (The Vampire Diaries): Sure, Damon may have stabbed Mason at some point or pulled his heart out of his chest, but don’t be fooled… this unlikely bromance went deep.

- Jesse Kovacs and Dave Good (The Bachelor Pad): When the popular dating franchise decided to throw together a bunch of ex contestants, we knew there was potential for some matches, but we weren’t expecting these two to hit it off in this spectacular bromance.

More Reviews of Castle 3×07: Almost Famous #2

Castle: “Almost Famous”
It’s Raining Murder: Beckett & Castle at the strip club
After last week’s darker “3XK”, Castle was back to its old self with an episode that was heavy on the laughs. What I’ve noticed is this show tends to be at its best when the Case of the Week involves some of the steamier sides of crime such as S&M clubs. So “Almost Famous” was bound to be good since it had to do with male strippers, and it did not disappoint. We got some classic Castle & Beckett moments (it’s great when they play a couple) as well as some hilarious Ryan & Esposito scenes (“Twilight my ass”). I don’t remember who the killer was and why they did it, but I do remember laughing a lot which is all I ask from Castle.

Another fun episode. Not the best, as far as the central murder mystery, but the side characters really stole the show this time. Alexis and Martha and Ryan and Esposito. I love that the cast is so strong, you can focus on the side stories and still really have a strong and fulfilling episode. Great work all in the Castle cast and crew. Keep it up!
