While it’s easy to spend much of our “Castle” time talking about Castle and Beckett (mostly because they are rather amazing), don’t some other people in relation to the show deserve a little bit of love?

With that in mind, our following bit of season 5 scoop is really all about the buddy cop relationship between one Ryan and Esposito. So what’s going to happen following Esposito’s suspension — and will him taking Beckett’s side hurt his friendship with Ryan in any way?

You have to love how hardcore Esposito is. He was having Beckett’s back, no matter the cost. And it cost him. Gates laid the smack down and put both detectives on leave. It doesn’t make too much of a difference to Beckett, who decided to resign instead. Javi is now pissed at Ryan for going to Gates. Could our favorite bromance be over?

The fundamental differences between the two men played out and potentially changed everything. Esposito’s aggression and recklessness supported Beckett, but it was Ryan’s caution and respect for order that saved the day.

Then there’s the fact that there are going to be some lingering issues between Ryan and Esposito to address, and you can’t forget that Maddox is still out there. There’s a lot that’s going to need to be addressed when season 5 begins, and now fans know officially that they’ll have that fifth season to see just that.

Did Ryan do the right thing and where will this leave he and Esposito?
Courtney: I think so. He wasn’t out to get Javi and Kate. He wanted to be there for them. He wanted to protect them and get them the backup they needed. It was from a friendly place, even if it did get them put on leave. Javi is pissed now because he is out of work, but he will realize Ryan was just doing what he thought was right for the situation and that he was trying to have their backs. The bromance will be worked out and Espo will be back at work in no time.

Marlowe: [With] Beckett and Castle getting together, we felt it was time to challenge some of the other relationships so we’d have somewhere to go with the storytelling. Ryan has to make a choice that ends up with Esposito feeling like he’s been betrayed. The two of them are definitely on the outs.

But while it’s great that Caskett is finally actually a thing, things didn’t turn out so happily for one of “Castle’s” other fan-favorite pairings. Ryan and Esposito end the year with betrayal, which Marlowe says was another outcome they’ve planned for a while.

“We planted the seeds but not heavily,” he says. “The two of them are kind of a reflection of Castle and Beckett, having a little bit of that bicker banter back and forth. We can’t work with Nathan and Stana all day every day, so it was important for us when we had scenes when they weren’t in it we were still maintaining the tone and integrity of the storytelling of the show, that we still had that sort of witty rapport and banter going back and forth between them.”
